Mission of the League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan organization, encourages the informed and active participation of government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Nonpartisan means we neither support nor oppose candidates at any level of government, but are always working on issues that concern our members and the public.

Jefferson County League - First in the Country

The Jefferson County League, the first county League in the United States, was organized on May 27, 1953 with a membership of about sixty women in three units. The board meetings were held in a milk house office on an old farm. An education committee was also established. In January of 1954, the national board of the League of Women Voters gave full recognition to the Jefferson County League of Women Voters. All subsequent county Leagues were patterned after it.

Certain traditions have also evolved over the years: meeting yearly with area legislators at the Legislative Breakfast, our Day at the Legislature during each session, and publication of the Citizen's Guide for the public.  More

Due to the large area of Jefferson County, meetings are held in six different sections of the county. Contact Sally Collins at JeffcoLWV@netzero.net  to find out which meeting place will be most convenient.
